Abstract
Pregnant women with disabilities, particularly deaf and mute may therefore be at risk of being viewed through a medical lens solely because of their particular disability. Deaf people are often referred to as deaf and dumb' or hearing impaired', both of which are offensive terms. Deaf and mute pregnant women are often inappropriate and undertaken without knowledge or understanding of their communication needs. Pregnancy, labour and delivery are physiological but distressful situations. Tender loving care and patience in communication are essential for all patients in labour. This is even more so for handicapped patients, particularly if they are deaf and mute. This document presents the research study exploring the strengths and weaknesses of health services provided to women that is deaf and mute in relation to pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood. The purpose of this review was to identify and analyze the challenges posed by caring and facing pregnant women that is deaf and mute in accessing health services during pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. The challenges that are encountered by the midwives are first: having communication barriers. Being the fact that the pregnant is deaf and mute it is very hard t to communicate with them, it is also hard for the midwives to understand them. So having good communication is really hard for them. Next is the instance that the patient is left alone during and after giving birth It's hard for the midwives to understand them if there is no relative of the patient that would help them understand the patient better. Last is the lack of proper training, midwives are not used to have this kind of patients so they knew nothing about sign language which they believe is very essential to learn. So they wanted to. These midwives knew that they have to do something in order to cope up and adjust to the challenges and problems posed by caring for such patients. They knew that they have to understand the patients very well, to put yourself in their situation and to give extra care because they are special compared to normal pregnant women. And also you need to learn new techniques and the proper process of handling them. Surely, these experiences have a great impact in the midwifery profession and for the midwives as well. It shows that it will help them grow in their profession because by ex periencing this kind of situation that equips them in the future. That next time having this kind of patient and situation, they already know what to do. It also shows that midwives feel that they did their job well if they have surpassed handling pregnant women that is deaf and mute. They were happy that they had experienced that kind of situation
