Abstract
Previous studies have examined the impact of prenatal diagnosis of a congenital The researchers used an exploratory qualitative approach in the research abnormality on women's experience of pregnancy. However, in many of those studies, the infants had lethal abnormalities or complications from the abnormality that resulted in death. There was very little research focused on the experience of pregnancy in which nonlethal fetal abnormality had been diagnosed. This research aimed to explore, describe and gain an understanding of the lived experiences of pregnant mothers while carrying a child known to have a non-lethal anomaly and how they were able to reflect and deal with the challenge of becoming mothers to infants with abnormalities. inquiry. Employing this, the researchers gathered data using semi-structured interview captured through an audio and video recording devise. The informants of the study satisfied the following inclusion criteria (a) has knowledge of a nonlethal fetal abnormality and had decided not to terminate their pregnancy; (b) has known about the abnormality for at least I week, so they had time to reflect on the diagnosis; (c) are interviewed before 37 weeks gestation, so the focus was on the pregnancy experience; (d) are able to speak and read in Filipino or English and are able to articulate the expert of pregnancy. The number of informants of the research is based on the principle of data saturation or data redundancy in qualitative studies. The data collected were transcribed after which it was then subjected to analysis. Once transcription was completed, the transformed meaning units were subsequently analyzed to identify Common themes reported by them and synthesized into an overall description of the phenomenon. Informants reviewed the final description, each of whom verified that it has captured the true essence of their own experience. Three major themes emerged from this study namely: "Time as a paradox" which talks about the important role of time throughout the experiences of pregnant mothers carrying a child with known nonlethal anomaly, "Grieving in Paradoxical Manner emphasizes the negative emotional reactions and positive coping mechanisms of the mothers and "Perfectly Imperfect" describes the pre-natal attachment despite of anomaly. These major themes formed reflect the lived experiences of pregnant mothers carrying a child with known nonlethal anomaly. The researchers concluded that mothers with knowledge of a fetal abnormality positive and negative consequences. Moreover, the researchers recommended that these paradoxical experiences of pregnant mothers should be used as an awareness for some health care providers, including midwives.
