Abstract
Autism is a develop mental disorder that is characterized by impaired develop;ment in communication , social interaction and behavior . It afflicts one out of every 100 to 166 children and it affects the lives of many children and their families. The manner in which a mother generally adapts in taking care of a child with autism could produce an impact towards their daily living . That is why,the proponents of the study decided to make a research about the level of adaptation among mother of children with autism in selected SpED schools in bulacan. The researchers used a descriptive correlational research design and they included 38 respondents who have been selected through a purposive sampling technique. Inclusion criteria were set which included mothers who were capable of giving consent who have an autistic child aged 6-15 years old wit their children enrolled in the selected four public and private SpED schools. Moreover the proponents of the study used an adapt questionnaire from Sister Callista Roy which is categorized according to adaptive modes:Psychologic , Self concept, role function and inter dependence mode . The results of the study indicate that 28.95 % of the respondents are from ages 36-40,57.89% of them hav male autistic child while 28.95% have one or two children, iot also shows that 76.32% of them are plain housewives .the results further suggest that mothers have the highest level of adaptation in terms of their role function with a wieghted mean of 3.15 ,verbal interpretation of Adapted, followed by Phsysiologic mode with 3.01 mean and interpreted as Adapted, Self-Concept,2.94 mean Adapted, and least level of adaptation in terms of their interdependence mode which only got 2.89 mean and interpreted as Adapted. These results relate to the fact that mothers are having difficulty relating and working with others. Using contingency table the researchers also found out that 46.67% mothers of female autistic children have a higher level of adaptation than those of male children. In addition ,it asslo demonstrates that 31% of housewife mothers have a higher of adaptation than mothers who are engaged in different occupations. Furthermore, hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance . Hence , with the calculated r value of -0.045(age) and adjusted r value of -0.0269 and 0.34(number of children) and adjusted r value of 0.088, the researchers concluded that there is no significant relationship between the repondent's profile and their level of adaptation. This means that the age and the number of children account only 10% of the factors that may affect their level of adaptation and other 90% of the attributing factors are still to be determined by the next researchers . Henceforth , the result points out that with a computed t value of -0.55 there is no significant difference between the level of adaptation among mothers from publi and private Sped SCHOOLS. Therefore , the researchers strongly recommend that organizations that primarily provide guidance and support to the respondents may be formed.
