Abstract
In every school, Filipino subject is an integral part of the curriculum in the Philippine education. In this subject, students are taught about the essence of the Filipino language and make everyone appreciate the subject. It highlights the importance of learning the native language as Filipino citizens. However, as time passes by, many students no longer appreciate the subject. Most Filipino students have lost interest in this subject with the perception that there is no need to allot attention as they believe that they are already adept on the subject matter. With this, the study aimed to identify and explain the factors affecting the interest of Dr. Yanga’s College’s Inc. High School students towards Filipino Subject. This study was conducted utilizing the descriptive — survey method to identify and factors affecting the interest of the High School students leading to problems and difficulties encountered by students towards mastering learning competencies in Filipino subject. Using the Slovin’s formula, the respondents in this study were the 300 High School students of Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. who were randomly selected. These 300 students from High School were the representatives of the I whole population of High School students in Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. The respondents were selected using stratified random sampling wherein year level was the used strata. The participants were composed of six (6) students per section of the 50 sections of the High School Department of Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. In this study, the researchers gathered data using questionnaires as survey forms. The kind of survey used is LikertScale using a 4 point scale. The survey questionnaire consisted of 12 questions rated as 4-. Extremely Influential, 3- Moderately Influential, 2- Slightly Influential and 1- Not Influential at all. The question was then submitted to pilot testing. The reliability of the questionnaire is determined as 0.77 which indicates that it is reliable fo pilot testing by the pilot test respondents. Based on the analysis and interpretation from the data gathered, the following conclusions were drawn; Under Teachers Factor, the teacher’s motivation and skill got the highest weighted mean of 3.48 and has standard deviation of 0.63. The teacher’s grooming got the weighted mean of 3.03 and has standard deviation of 0.78. Under Students factor, the learners believe that Filipino subject is useful and important got the highest weighted mean of 3.53 and has 0.60 standard deviation. The level of understanding of students got the lowest weighted mean of 3.07 and 0.79 standard deviation. Moreover, for Environmental Factors the highest weighted mean is 3.10 and has a standard deviation of 0.77, which elaborately relates that the most affecting situation is the ventilation of the classroom. The seating arrangement affects their interest got the weighted mean of 2.93 and a standard deviation of 0.96 which is the lowest. With these, the researchers recommend that the teachers need to think of different strategies that can catch students attention as well as to motivate them to pursue their study in Filipino subject. Teachers should also use teaching aids because these can motivate student to learn faster. Teacher should have a bright insight to use visual aids that can attract students.
