Social media is a group of Internet-based applications that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0, and that allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content.(Andreas Kaplan and Michael Haenlein). Internet users continue to spend more time with social media sites than any other type of site. At the same time, the total time spent on social media in the U.S. across PC and mobile devices increased by 37 percent to 121 billion minutes in July 2012 compared to 88 billion minutes in July 2011 (According to Nielsen).
As social media networking sites continue to grow in popularity, it is our premise that technology is a vital part in today’s student success equation. This descriptive, exploratory research study drew a sample (N=100) of males (n=98) and females (n=2) who were administered a student perception questionnaire on how social media affects college students. The results of the survey questionnaire indicted that 48% of the sample admitted that they spent 6 hours above per day checkihg social media sites, while 30% spent 4 to 5 hours and only 22% spent 2 to 3 hours on this task. Results indicated most college students used social media and spent many hours checking social media sites, there was a negative aspect to college students’ use of social media.
These recommendations will at least help minimize arid eradicate the effects of social media networks to each of the students in Dr. Yanga’s Colleges, Inc. most especially to the addicted and distracted one .These social media networks are acceptable and digested as part of this generation, however, when it is obviously and clearly evident to everyone that these bring alarm and apprehension to the majority, people should stop and at least make a move to lower the cause.
