Abstract
Delivery of affordable access to essential drugs has been one of the banner projects of the Arroyo administration. This initiative includes the Botika ng Barangay, now numbering thousands and the direct outlet of affordable and equivalently effective medicines. With affordable prices and millions of pesos allotted, the program has a very tremendous potential for positive health outcomes, if the target beneficiaries buy into it.— The study aimed to determine the extent of the utilization of the
‘Botika ng Barangay’ in selected barangays in Bulacan. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the extent of the utilization of the ‘Botika ng Barangay’ in terms of the purchase demands for drugs, in terms of the supplies of medicines based on the program’s authorized list of drugs to sell and in terms of the patients’ perceived benefits. The study also aimed to determine if there was no significant difference among the responses from the four locales.
One hundred twenty respondents constituted the respondents; thirty from each selected locale were used as informants and accomplished a questionnaire! survey. Respondents graded their extent of utilization according to the formulated Likert scale ranging from 5, 4, 3, 2, and I with descriptive equivalent, ie., Always, Most of the Time, Sometimes, and Seldom respectively. Selected respondents were living within 200 meters radius of an existing ‘Botika ng Barangay’ outlet. 85.83% from the respondents were married and 86.67% belong to families with a weekly income between phpl000.00 and php2, 500.00. The utilization of the ‘Botika ng Barangay’ in terms of demands over the counter was “Most of the time”. While Utilization in terms of prescription based purchases utilization obtained “Sometimes”. In terms of types of supplies or medicines bought, most of the respondents bought only five classes of medicine. Utilization of the Botika ng Barangay in terms of perceived benefits gauged “Most of the Time” in terms of benefits of access, benefits of low price and equivalence of drugs to those from popular drugstores.
Results of the Anova made on the data of the four locales indicated significant differences in the means of the extent of utilization of the Botika ng Barangay. The researchers concluded that the extent of utilization of the Botika ng Barangay was favorable and positive for the residents but was very limited in terms ot available medicines.
