Abstract
This research study dealt with the Nutritional Assessment of Second Year High School Students of DYCI in Relation With Their Academic Performance of the School Year: 2010-2011. It utilized descriptive method as a survey research design and simple random sampling method to undersize the six hundred total populations of second year high school students. To come up with the 250 respondents, the researchers utilized Slovin’s Formula as a tool.
The researchers gather information about the respondents through distributing research questionnaires. The questionnaires are divided into four parts, namely the respondents’, profile, anthropometric data, academic performance, and nutritional assessment.
The theory of Abraham Maslow, which is known as the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs was applied in the study by the researchers since the theory focus on the needs of a person from the level of Physiological Needs up to Self-actualization.
The researchers used Frequency Distribution, percentage, and weighted mean to organize and interpret the data gathered. At the same time, Pearson r, t-test and Degrees of Freedom was also used to correlate the dependent and the independent variables.
This paper will show the factors that may possibly affect the academic performance of the second year high school students as their nutritional status get
involved. Hence, this study will give proof or basis on the concept of the nutrition in the field of education specifically in learning.The research also aims to provide awareness as well as to develop better understanding of the concept and ideas in nutrition and relate them in everyday sense of interest for greater knowledge and skills achievement as the students prepare for higher learning.
This research will also serve as basis for future studies on the upcoming nursing student researchers.
At the end of the research, this study proves that nutritional status could affect the students’ academic performance. This may help the respondents to achieve their scholastic goals for better progress which in turn will improve their grades. At the same time, better grades can boost their confidence to have a good representation of themselves on the academic world.
A 1 month diet plan in school was recommended in this study in order for the students to achieve the necessary nutrients that they need.
