Abstract
Sleep is a basic human need. In order to function optimally, one must achieve quality sleep. It is through quality sleep that the body is restored and refreshed.yet achievement of quality sleep is often a problem of those working in the night shift. One of the work forces affected are the health care profesionals such as nurses, gave enough reason for the researchers for pursuing this study. The object of this study is to investigate the impact of the overall quality sleep in the provision of quality care of nurses.Descriptive correlational design was utilized in the study . A total of 30 nurse respondents were purposively selected according to the inclusioon criteria set by the researchers . The criteria included medical ward nurses working in selected tertiary hospitals in bulacan, who had recently experienced working in the night shift for at least a week and had at least 1 year working experience in the hospital. Two adapted instruments were used in the study :The sleep quality scale with a cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.92 for internal consistency ,which was made valid and reliable instrument, and Self -assessment of quality care rendered to patients based on the core competency 1:Safe and quality nursing practice of the core competency standards for nursing practice set by the board of nursing in the Philippines. The results revealed that 36.67% of the respondents were male and 63.33% were female. The respondents assessed themselves of the quality sleep and the quality care they provide through the adapted self assessment tools. The nurse respondents' assessment of their overall quality sleep, amean of 2.81,was a good level of quality sleep .the quality care assessment revealed a mean of 3.84 which was a very good level of quality care. Also, it revealed that male nurses have better quality sleep and better quality care level than females. A positive correlation (r=0.59) was found between the level of quality sleep and level of quality care ,with an adjusted r of 0.31. it can be assumed that quality sleep is 31% predictor of quality care ,It turned out that after analyzing data using critical value of t=1.701 computed at 0.05 level of significance, the null hypothesis was rejected(computed t=5.90>1.701 thus there is asignificant relationship between two variables . Therefore the level of quality sleep experienced by a nurse has an impact on the level of quality care they provide to their clients.different measures on promoting quality sleep ,such as managing sleep and having appropriate sleep hygiene were recommended.furthermore ,providing flexible shits, continually measures monitor and improve nursing Care and encourage proffesional development for nurses through seminars, workshops and update courseswere also recommended.
