Abstract
Comprehension in reading a literary piece written during old english, middle english and early modern english is a quite a challenging for a 21st century learners, who are basically taught in standard english with is the contemporary modern english. , though, these language belong to only one language still they are considered to be variance of one another, because there are words especially in old english which mean opposite to the suggested meaning in a contemporary modern english. there are also words in old and middle english which are unfunctional in the contemporary modern english, grammar, is also one of the factors ehich makes this languages more confusing. This research had arrived to an intervention that would help the learners to understand literary pieces even if they were written in former english, the intervention is called code switching which describe as the practice of alternating between two or more languages or varieties of languages in a conversation or in writing. The researchers also aimed to compare the level of grammatical skill and vocabulary skill of the students who received the intervention compared to students who did not . The researcher used the experimental design; Participants on the other hand were of poor comprehensions skill. The grouping was done through an odd-even random sampling. The first group was the experimental group they were group of the students who received the interventions, they were given a literary piece written in middle english with some of a code swicthed words under the contemporary modern english,,after reading they were asked to answer the comprehension test , vocabulary test, and the grammar test, Thr flow in test in the control group was the same as experiment group, thE only dirrence was the literary piece that was given to both groups was in an original composition or no code switched words in contemporary modern english happened. The results of the percentages of score in comprehension test had a different of 6.64 percent providing code switching to be an effective intervention in improving comprehension of the students. while in vocabulary test, the conspicuous difference of the total percentage in the average level of the two groups had affirmed code switching to be helpful in understanding the whole idea of the literacy pice. of result of the grammar test, there was only a little difference on the total percentage in both groups and code switching group still got the highest percentage of the total percentages of scores. The researchers identified that there was a significant difference between code switching and monolingual approach in improving comprehension of the students using a t-test. As future language teachers, code switching is one of the techniques in improving the teaching of literature of the students to better understand the content of the literary piece that they are reading and shakespeare's macbeth. Chaucer's canterburry tales would never be an uphill struggle for the learners of this century.
