Abstract
It has been proven in various researches that there is a strong correlation between reading and academic success. Students who were exposed in reading at an early stage have a higher possibility to excel in classroom performance. Through time, reading materials have evolved from books and now youth are fond of using electronic books in their gadgets. As time passes by, the use of audiobooks has also been a trend as a reading material. According to Social Weather Survey (SWS) the number of the youth who are into reading is continuously declining. On the contrary, the population of people who are using E-books and audiobooks are flourishing. With this, the researchers aimed to determine if the use of audiobook is effective in improving the reading comprehension of the grade 10 pupils of Magis in Dr. Yanga’s Colleges Inc. The researchers used quantitative-experimental design that identified the significant difference between the use of audiobook and the traditional reading material. The participants consisted of two groups; experimental and control with 25 students each group. The control group used the traditional reading material i.e. printed and was given a ten-item comprehension test after reading. On the other hand, the experimental group used audiobook and was given the same ten-item comprehension test. The researchers used the selection “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury which was suited for their level. With the result of the overall mean for the scores of the control group, 79.2, which is lower compared to 85.8 of the experimental group. As with the case of the comprehension level, the students in the experimental group achieved higher scores on the reading comprehension tests than the students in the control group. The researchers used T-test in evaluating the results that was validated by the paper adviser. Based on the statistics, results revealed a t-stat value of 2.45 against the 2.01 t-critical value with a p-value of <0.05 which means that there is a significant difference between the comprehension of the two groups. On the basis of these, the researchers suggest that the school devices a program installing audiobooks in the high school library so that high school students can experience it and consequently improve their comprehension ability.
