Abstract
Technological advancement had become very influential to almost all settings including peoples’ interest in the entertainment field. Apparently, these advancements also tackle the use of modern media including improved theatre experience. It is then perceived that films, movies and any other visual presentations would be useful in improving students’ learning once used as an instructional material in classroom settings. It is believed that the use of films with the aid of printed translation of textual versions of dialogue below the screens ie subtitle could help in improving comprehension ability. As a matter of fact, many researchers supported that subtitle assists the viewers to understand the movie. However, some negate the contribution of subtitles in enhancing comprehension With these, the objective of this study therefore is to determine if subtitled movies is effective in enhancing the students’ comprehension. The researchers used pure- experimental approach and a post test evaluation. A total of 54 students were purposively selected according to the criteria set by the researchers. The students were divided into two equal groups; the experimental group who watched the selected movie with subtitle and the control group who watched without the subtitle. After viewing, the participants answered the post -test questionnaire for the collection of numerical data needed for the evaluation of results. The results revealed that among the twenty seven students in control group, only seven students (25.9%) obtained excellent scores while there were twenty students (74.1%) who obtained the above average percentage. In the level of comprehension for experimental group, among the twenty seven students, twenty one students (77.8%) got an excellent percentage and just six students (22.2%) for above average level. In comparing the results of both groups, the t-test for two sample mean was used. The control group got a mean score of 78.51 with a standard deviation of 4.25 while the mean score and standard deviation of the experimental group were 84.03 and 4.37 respectively. The results showed a T- statistic value of 4.07 against a 1.67 t- critical value with p< 0.05 which means that the null hypothesis should be rejected. The results therefore showed that there is significant difference on the comprehension ability between groups who watched subtitled and non-subtitled movie. Based on the findings, the researchers concluded that the students in experimental group outperformed the students from the control group which means that the use of subtitled movie is effective in improving comprehension ability of students. Therefore, the researchers firmly promote the use of subtitled movie as a tool for comprehension enhancement as part of teaching strategy.
