Abstract
Resuscitation is the attempt to bring back one's life vital signs by mechanical, physiological and pharmacological means in emergency situations such as cardiac arrest. Embedded in the concept of resuscitation is a very stressful experience both for the patient and the family members, more so, if the family member is allowed to be present during such attempt. This phenomenon is referred to as Family Witnessed Resuscitation (FWR). The effect of family presence during CPR on the family members themselves could significantly result to a traumatic experience. This is why when a patient is undergoing resuscitation; it has been a common practice to exclude family members from the clinical area as they could impede this life-sustaining process. The presence of family members during resuscitation therefore has been controversial and has stimulated discussion and debate worldwide. Hence, the aim of this research paper is to gain a comprehensive understanding captured from the lived experiencesof family members who witnessed resuscitation. The researchers made use of Colaizzi's seven step approach in making a descriptive phenomeno logical research inquiry. The selection of co-researchers was guided by the set inclusion criteria which include: 1)family members who have witnessed the resuscitation of their loved ones in the hospital who eventually have not survived the resuscitation. 2)should have lived together with the deceased loved one 3)phenomenon should have happened at least a year ago, and 4) be of legal age The eight co researchers of the study all satisfied the criteria above making them eligible for study. Saturation was reached after the sixth interview. Using semi structured instrument. The researchers conducted an in-depth interview with the aid of the video and audio recorder. Through free imaginative variation, the researchers looked fore connections between and among statements gathered. Meanings were then created and coding was developed to facilitate the interpretation of the statements.Through this, an exhaustive description written was written to elucidate the experiences of the co-researchers, Aside from the member checking done by the researchers to establish rigor, they also identified their own biases and individual prepositions regarding the research topic, from these strategies, the researchers formulated three emergent themes namely: Fleeting Emotional Disturbance which indicates how the family members describe their initial behavior and feelings during cardio pulmonary reseuscitation of their loved one. Wading through Grief that refers to the co-researchers ways of coping that have enabled them to accept what happened and cosequently move forward, and Redeveloping Connections, which relates to how the co-reasearchers establish relationships and reintegrate oneself to the realities of life , Based on the findings, the researchers then concluded that family members who were present during the resuscitative process engaged in a highly stressful and traumatic scene both psychologically and emotionally during and after resuscitation. In this relation, the researchers therefore recommend the health care providers to give comfort and reassurance , provide emotional and spiritual support, and provide knowledge able explanations to the family members to assist in the end-of-life decision making and facilitate the grieving process.
