Abstract
Outcome-Based Education is a new system that the Philippines Education has. to find out how performance of the students using the pencil-and-paper test differ from This OBE focuses on the performance of each students inside and outside of the classrooms. The Outcome-based education is now being implemented in most subjects through Performance-Based Assessment except in the field of Mathematics.
Performance-Based Assessment is not a kind of assessment where the students simply choose an answer but it is a kind of assessment where the students must construct, produce an output and perform some kind of activity. Performance-Based Assessment is still questionable in the said subject thus sticking with the traditional way of assessment
which is pencil-and-paper test. With this, the researchers conducted this study to determine if the performance-based assessment could be a new type of assessment in the field of Mathematics to be an adjunct tool to the traditional way. The aim of this study is those who were assessed based on performance. The researchers used experimental method utilizing T-test to determine if there is a significant difference and performance
of the student when they are assessed using performance-based assessment. Participants were selected through random sampling to minimize biases. The study was conducted in Dr. Yanga's Colleges Inc. Junior High School Department, one section was divided into
two groups randomly; 30 students assigned in experimental group and 30 students for control group. The result were computed, analyzed, and interpreted by the researchers with the help of Microsofi Excel Data Analysis. The researchers used item analysis for
validation if written examination which got all passed in each item. For the rubrics, reliability test reveals a Cronbach's alpha value of 0.78 which means that it is acceptable for usage. Based on the results, it revealed that the learmers in the experimental group who were assessed using performance-based assessment performed better than when
assessed using pencil-and-paper. In addition, the identified difference is found to be significantly difference. Using performance-based assessment the students were able to apply what they have learned on the task and used their critical thinking skills to solve ther real-life problems. Performance-based assessment also helped the students to master the s
lesson, and at the same time they were motivated in doing the tasks given to them.
Through Performance-Based assessment, the students were able to excel and developed h
their reasoning skills.
