Abstract
This study is entitled the education and awareness of elderly men aged 50-80 years old regarding Stroke at Barangay Telabastagan, San Fernando, Pampanga. This study is about developing a dearer understanding of stroke. Stroke is the sudden loss of brain function. It is a medical emergency that may result in paralysis, severe brain damage, or death. Most strokes occur when a bJood dot blocks the flow of blood to the brain, interrupting the brain’s supply of oxygen and nutrients. If the blockage lasts for more than a few minutes, permanent damage occurs. Strokes also may result when a blood vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain or the fluid around the brain. The bleeding produces pressure that damages brain tissue.
The participants in this study were the elderly men aged 50-80 years old regarding Stroke at Barangay Telabastagan, San Fernando, Pampanga. The total population of the said barangay was approximately 5,500 residents.
The researchers prepared a questionnaire that will evaluate the perception of the elderly men regarding stroke. The participants were asked of their knowledge and understanding about stroke, the first part is about the demographic profile of the respondents about their age, civil status and educational background. The second part is composed of questions that are of ne following: on how they define stroke: sudden toss of brain function, ruptured aneurysm in the brain or ocdusion or rupture of blood vessel in the brain. kother is on how they able to know stroke that the possible response as: from a gamily, friend or a doctor. And if they were among those that are diagnose, not ag nosed or treated of stroke. The respondents were also asked of the factors at may lead to stroke if they were positive in these like hypertension, alcohol se. smoking cigarettes, familial history of stroke and sedentary lifestyle. In dition are the possible sign and symptoms of stroke: a loss of feeling in the face and a problem with their eyes.
This study utilized other studies about stroke from books, journals and emet access. The significance of this study is that it will be added to the study of stroke among elderly men. It will be used to know if the elderly women are aware of this illness. For the success of treating a person suffering from stroke depends on the early detection.
