Abstract
ABSTRACT
“Evaluation of alcohol drinker among men ages 13 to 50 years old at Barangay Don Bosco Better Living, Paranaque was chosen to be the focus of the study. One of the major concerns today is the increasing number of alcoholic drinkers among adolescents and adult men. The researcher attempted to study what triggers the adolescents to alcoholism as revealed by their perceptions, attitudes and views. We asked why alcohol drinking has been a part of their lifestyle. The researcher tried to enter the young people’s mind to probed why they tolerated such habit and what influenced them to alcohol drinking.
The study consisted of a series of interviews and prepared questionnaires given to adolescents of Barangay Better Living Paranaque whose ages ranges from fourteen to twenty years old. Result of the study revealed that young people usually wanted to be considered as a grown up and wanted to be part of the group “in” thereby giving the adolescents a sense of belonging. They drink alcohol because it relaxes their mind and temporarily get way from their worries and their problems. It have assurance and security to be a part of the peer group “barkada” and status in the group.
Then, then are those who turn to alcohol because of emotional problems, particularly depression, loneliness and frustration and also family problems.This research study has helped adolescents in Barangay Don Bosco Better Living understand the large problem of alcoholism among young people and its bad effects on their health. Clinical study have shown that long term abuse of alcohol increases the person’s risk of cancer of the mouth, threat, esophagus , rectum and lungs. It is believed that alcoholism together with malnutrition increases the risk of certain form of anorexia. Studies have also shown that alcohol dependency develop when a variety of psychological , biological and cultural factors are involved although not in combination.
In a society where alcohol drinking is allowed, the problem also lies in the amount of alcohol intake. The problem therefore lies in not knowing when to stop drinking. This research study has shown that drinking alcohol in moderation can be helpful and beneficial to improving one’s health. But for those who have become addicted to alcohol should accept the consequences. They should consider seeking help from health professionals and commit themselves to solving the addiction problem. The support of the family during this time is encouraged as well as the support from fellow alcoholics.
