Abstract
To communicate is an act that one does for him/her to gain information as well as to impart knowledge to others. One type of communication that people use every day is the verbal communication. It is the way of communicating through the use of words and one's voice. One can say that knowing how to communicate verbally is essay, especially in school, since it is one of the ways where the learners can acquire others' ideas and share their own. However, the learners find it difficult to communicate in their class using the English language. Some factors that hinder them from persistently using English in communicating is their lack of practice in using the said language and their inadequate knowledge about grammar. The researchers believe that in implementing a collaborative and engaging activity in the classroom, the learners will be able to enhance their skills in communicating verbally in English. The round table approach is one of the strategies that can help the teachers to improve their learners English verbal communication skills for its purpose is to make the learners interact and ask for each other's notions. In this study, the researchers intended to know the differences of the English verbal communication skills of the Grade 6 learners between the participants who were taught using the conventional approach and the round table approach. The quantitative and experimental research design was used in this study. The study had two groups: one Grade 6 section was assigned as the control group, and another section was assigned as the experimental group. In the control group, the learners were taught using the conventional approach, while in the experimental group, the learners were taught using the round table approach. The two Grade 6 sections from Balagtas Central School that participated in the study were selected randomly. A total of 60 pupils 30 for each section-were the participants. The researchers used a rubric, which was validated by five experts, as their instrument in knowing the Grade 6 learners' English verbal communication skills. One of the researchers taught the participating learners in the control and experimental group. After teaching, the learners were given the time to think of their answers, and later on were asked to recite their thoughts. The students were scored in terms of their ideas, organization of their thoughts, vocabulary skills, grammar skills, and their elocution. From the results that were gathered, using the round table approach in enhancing the learners English verbal communication skills had been proven to be effective. Therefore, the round table approach can be used in teaching and helping the learners to develop their English verbal communication skills for it aided the participants in this study in voicing out their thoughts with much more confidence.
