Abstract
Home is one of our basic needs. It is a place that protects us,keeps us warm and safe, and satisfies our other needs. However, some people are less fortunate to have permanent home. They usually live in different unsafe places such as corridors ,under the bridges, and mostly in the streets . There is an estimated 100 million people worldwide who are homeless. In the philippines, there is 32.8 million or 40% of the population who live in slums (Homeless International,2008). Based on these facts, this study aimed to gain an understanding of the life of families living in a rolling home "kariton"thereby providing relevant insights to fill the research gap concerning the phenomenon and contribute to the body of research currently available. The researchers utilized qualitative phenomenological design as outlined by Collaizi to capture the essences from the lived experiences of families living in a rolling home.to gather co-researchers as sources of data ,the researchers utilized purposive sampling. The researchers selected participants according to the following inclusion criteria:(1) a family with 3 or more members who stays in "kariton".(2)head of the family who is willing to participate,(3)at least 18 yrs old;and (4)families who have been homeless for at least one year. This study involved seven co-researchers who satisfied the above mentioned criteria. Data saturation was achieved after the seventh co-researcher was interviewed. To establish rigor and trustworthiness of this research paper, several strategies were implemented which includes identification of personal biases of the researchers and content validation . Three emergent themes were formulated reflecting the lived experiences of families living in kariton. These include Perilious Adversities that highlights the challenges and extra loads face by the families living in kariton as they live their lives everyday,Passive Persistence which reflects the passive adaptation expressed by the families who live in kariton.and Perpetual Resilienceis best explained by the families' ability to become strong again despite their current situation, that they will continue to hurdle and overcome everything . Based on the findings,it is then concluded that families living in a kariton are faced with caried challenges including physiological , financial and psychological starins. In addition, these families are engaged and dependent on scavenging and begging as primary resource. With all these facts , the researchers therefore recommend that the Government should provide relocation for these families in more conducive and safe areas supported with employment and/or "Kabyhayan Programs" As for the nurses, an extensive health education program may be provided concerning self-care and other health promotion activities.
