Abstract
Kidney donation is the process of giving a kidney into another person for the purpose of transplantation. Some believe that donating a kidney is a major surgery but has not been shown to reduce the donor's life expectancy with its mortality rate 0.3% (i.e., 3 in 10,000). Notwithstanding the risk for developing complications ,donors were still motivated to give . According to National Kidney Transplant Institute (2008),there were 5,733 living kidney donors in Bulacan and the number is still increasing overtime. Therefore ,extensively exploring the underlying problem seems particularly timely in the current context since living kidney donors have been scarcely studied. In this regard, the researchers aimed to explore the realities in their life after donating a kidney and how they came up with their decision to donate by gaining significant insights through eliciting an in depth understanding of their lived experiences. The researchers utilized a descriptive qualitative study in phenomenological approach as outlined by Collaizzi to capture the essences of kidney donors'lived experiences. Purposive and snowball sampling were utilized by the researchers in order to identify potential subjects in addition to satisfying the set criteria which include the following: People who donated their kidney to a relative or loved one for at least two years ago;should be residing in Bulacan ;and should sign a consent and is willing to participate and be involved with the study.Guided by the principle of data saturation, there were 5 co researchers who satisfied the said criteria .Letters of intent and consent were secured. A set of formulated questions was used as a guide during the interview process. Along with it audio recorders were used as a tool together with personal observations and field notes. After interviews were made and transcribed verbatim, significant statements were extracted and analyzed according to collaizi's framework and eventually fomed as a common emerged theme. To establish rogor and trustworthiness of research findings, bracketing, member checking and content validation were done thereafter. Results revealed the acronym GIVE which best represent the kidney donors' experiences from their donation act . With this, four major themes emerged and these include Growing Concern for the Recipient which highlights the donors' genuine concern for the receiver of their kidney;Impelling Motivation which emphasizes the primary motivation of kidney donors in donating their kidney as supported by different contributing factors. In addition,Valued Lifestyle Changes relates to the donors' experiences about dealing with different modifications and adjustments in order to restore normal life functioning. Lastly,Enriching Outcome reflects the results of donating a kidney wherein donors reported incresed self worth, self esteem and sense of spirituality, and strengthened familial relationship.Central to the phenomenon of "Gift of Life" the study revealed the kidney donors' selfless attitude by voluntarily giving a kidney to a relative or loved one for the reason of extending a life.under this phenomenon, kidney donors' perception towards life before and after the donation process was taken into account.based on this,it is then concluded that kidney donors gained personal benefits from their donation experience which was considered the focus of the study.these were then discussed in terms of their implications for nursing practice and research.
