Abstract
This study explored the relationship between the level of spirituality and the quality of life of patients undergoing Hemodialysis. The proponents of the study believed that nursing nowadays lacks the holistic component of caring for the patient. Much less, including spirituality as part of their nursing care, it is but a forgotten aspect. As the progress of the research went by, this interest in spirituality reflected a broader interest in quality of life issues. Respondents were asked to answer questionnaires as a means of gathering data. The Manual of Spiritual Well-being Scale by R. Paloutzian and C. Ellison was used to assess the level of spirituality. While for the Quality of Life, the Ferrans & Powers Quality of Life Index- Dialysis was used with internal consistency reliability of .73 to .99 using the Cronbach’s alpha. A correlational design was used. Thirty respondents from a Hemodialysis center were selected based on the set inclusion criteria which included: currently undergoing Hemodialysis treatment for at least six months, the patient had consent and had willingly answered the questionnaire with or without help from anybody, and age bracket is from [6 years old and above. Based on the results, there were 60% respondents who were 37 years old and above, while 40% were 26 to 36 years old. The gender percentage is 60% for male and 40% for female. Majority of the respondents were Roman Catholics, 93.33%. The 5.8 mean for the respondents’ level of spirituality means that respondents have high level of spirituality. Meanwhile, the highest mean for all the Quality of Life subscale is the Family, which had a 5.6 mean for importance and a 5.1 for satisfaction. It was followed by the psychological subscale, 5.0 and 5.38 for the importance and satisfaction items respectively. The next subscale is the Health and 1unctioiiing Subscale, mean of 4.49 for satisfaction and 5.28 Lor importance. Finally, the Social and Economic subscale has. A weighted mean of 4.4 for satisfaction and 5.2 for importance. Amongst the subscales, family has the highest mean which highlights the fact that Filipinos are generally family-oriented thereby considered of immense significance by the respondents. Relevantly, a very high correlation (r=0.95) was found between Level of Spirituality and Quality of Life, withan adjusted r-value of- 0.02. The computed t-value (85.26) which was greater than the critical value (2.0484) under the level of significance of 0.05, suggests that null hypothesis be rejected.
Therefore, it is concluded that there is a significant relationship between the respondents’ level of spirituality and quality of life. This implies that the patients’ belief in the Higher
Being is a major factor on why despite the hardships of their condition; they still have a chance of having a quality life. . In this relation, the researchers propose that spirituality be explored as part of the health coping process because the study has proven that spirituality has a positive effect on the overall outlook on their own health thus, affecting their quality of life.
