Abstract
The Filipino nurses are said to be the most in-demand health care personnel in most of the developed countries. These countries try to lure the nurses by offering salaries that are quite impossible to earn in the country, job perks such as allowance, paid holidays, insurances,, and, at times, immigration of nurse's entire family.
Such promises are to hard to ignore for the nurses who have limited opportunities and rarely earn enough to make ends meet their own country. But, these benefits are not the only factors that the nurses must take into consideration. They would be leaving their families behind, live alone in a strange land, and deal with a culture so seguritan, a writer in a new york publication said, 'no other person struggles more with the decision to leave or stay than the nurse herself".
Working in another country posits problems for the Filipino nurses; Problems, which, in one way or the other may effect the work performance of the nurses. Hence, the researchers came up with this study entitled" Dilemma of Filipino Nurses Working Abroad".
The study sought answer on what common problems Filipino nurses experience while working abroad and the effect of the problems on their work performance. The profile of the nurses and their reasons for working abroad were also touched by the study.
'Dilemma of Filipino Nirses Working Abraod" is a descriptive survey . It utilized purposive sampling, a non-probability type of sampling and came up with 50 respondents. All the respondents have work or are still working at the time of the survey in the United States or in the Middle East. Results of the survey were gathered through questionnaires administered personally, through courier or through electronic mail. The weighted arithmetic mean and frequency distribution and percentage were the statistical treatment applied th know the result of the survey.
The findings gathered from research and survey showed that there are more Filipino nurses going to the United States than the middle east. The majority is female and earning at least $2000. The main reasons nurses work abroad are greater compensation and the low salary they received in the Philippines.
Another finding yielded by the study is that problems are experiences by these nurses particularly in the working hours and social/ethical considerations. These problem is turn effect the work performance of the nurses.
The study proved that although there are many benefits for the nurses and their families when they work abroad, they also have to face problems once they start working on foreign soil. No matter how educationally prepared nurses are, the dilemma that they will face abroad would in a certain degree effect they work performance.
