Abstract
Without the sense of hearing,a child who is within the range of developing years can trigger changes in attitude, ability to communicate ,awareness of the environment, and even the ability to protect oneself that may consequently affect the person's quality of life . Therefore, special attention is merited to the hearing impaired .the responsibility of taking care of a hearing impaired may take a lot of risk and sacrifices that sometimes is hard to take .in this relation, this study aimed to have a thorough understanding of the lived experiences of the primary caregivers of children with hearing impairment. To realize this purpose,Collaizi;s approach in conducting a phenomenological inquiry was utilized.employing snowballand purposive sampling,co -researchers were selected in consideration of the set inclusion criteria namely:(1)primary caregivers from Bulacan who have been caring for a child since birth regardless of their relationship with the child,(2)the child with hearing impairment should be an adolescent at least 12 years old ,and (3) should also be congenital by nature and not using hearing aid.Data saturation was reached after the seventh co-researcher was interviewed. Data from the ten(10) co- researchers were the transcribed verbatim. Subsequently, narratives were analyzed to identify common themes reported by them and integrated those into meaningful experiences. to establish rigor of the research results ,bracketing, member checking and content validation were done. Three emergent themes were formulated depicting the lived experiences of the primary caregivers of the hearing impaired children which include Earnest Struggles that represents the co-researchers difficulties, challenges and additional loads in caring for the hearing impaired. A-ccustomation to ordeals which focuses on the coping mechanisms utilized by the primary givers as they endure and manage the strains ,and Redirection of Hopes reflects the hopes of the primary caregivers despite the presence of the hearing impairment of their children .Figuratively the acronym EAR best depicts the struggles and hopes of the primary caregivers of the hearing impaired.Based on the findings, the primary concern of the primary caregiver relates with the communication process with the hearing impaired as intensified by lack of financial stability.despite this,it is then concluded that acceptance indeed starts within the family and consequently ,societal acceptance will be achieved not only for the comfort of the primary caregivers but for the hearing impaired as well.on the basis of these,as nurses, the researchers then recommend the creation of support group to these caregivers to build a strong societal connection and lessen the feelings of isolation.Furthermore, additional special educaqtion(SPED)teachers are needed to assist the caregivers and accommodate the growing needs of the hearing impaired.
