Abstract
Nowadays, values education is being given emphasis in teaching-learning situations in the classroom. Researchers have noticed that values were not given attention anymore so many students grow to be intellectual giants but emotional dwarfs. Considering the important role and perceived effect in child’s development, psychologists promote digital storytelling as a good technique in teaching children. Digital storytelling doesn’t only influence creative thinking but also behaviour as well. These would let them create an image on their minds and put themselves on to the shoe of the character. Imitating good values from those images would impact on their hearts and put them into practice. Researchers therefore wanted to identify if these strategy would be an effective one in teaching Values education, specifically with the use of tablets. As future educator, it is our role to mold our students with values that they can apply in their daily lives. Researchers wanted to identify if this strategy would be an effective one in teaching values education. Also, researchers wanted to measure the level of learner’s understanding and learner’s interest toward values through the use of digital storytelling. The experimentation was then conducted. Likert-scale and post- test evaluations were distributed for the learners’ understanding and learners’ interest toward digital storytelling. Questionnaires gathered 0.72 on the reliability test and interpreted as “Acceptable”. Experimental design was applied. Thirty (30) participants were chosen from Grade-IT learners and participants were divided into two groups. Traditional Storytelling was conducted for the control group and Digital Storytelling for the experimental group. Participants were chosen through simple random sampling. Researchers chose Dr. Yanga’s Colleges, Inc. as the research locale. As to the significant difference of this experiment, the revealed computed value of T-test result was -6.61 against 2.048 T- Critical Value with Alpha Value of 0.05, which means that there is a significant difference between the performance of two groups. As to learner’s interest toward traditional and digital stories, the revealed computed value of U-test result is 72.32 against the 94.50 U-critical Value with Alpha Value of 0.5 which means that there is a significant difference between the level of interests of both groups. The researchers concluded that the digital storytelling was indeed effective. Results proved that digital storytelling had a significant difference from the traditional ones in teaching values. Children felt much excitement with digital stories and actively participate during discussions. Researchers therefore recommend this type of strategy is best for teachers as digital stories could be easily downloaded on the internet.
