Abstract
They say that man’s job would be mainly about being an engineer, a policeman, an architect or a pilot, but not completely about being a midwife. Men have been allowed to work as midwives for three decades, but only around 100 do, so and many expectant mothers remain unsure about having one for their birth. They say that they are not comfortable about giving birth with a male midwife attendant. This is why, it is very timely to study the influence of these issues about the profession that some male choose: Midwifery. Over the years, people have seen female midwives overpowering the society because of their huge number of passers and practitioners. Only a few men are in the field of midwifery because of a constant issue: Discrimination. The informants of this study were the seven (7) male midwives practicing in different health institutions. The criteria for selecting the subject is the length of service of male midwives in which they are practicing for three (3) years or more. The informants are presently working in different health institutions in Valenzuela, Caloocan, Malolos, Marilao, Bulacan and Manila. The semi-structured, conversational interview was used to achieve the main objective of the study. In addition, in-depth face-to-face interview which includes pre-listed guided question were utilized. Colaizzi’s method was used to analyze the data collected in this study. This phenomenological method of data analysis offers personal insights into how to present an auditable decision trail in a phenomenological research study and explores issues of rigor and trustworthiness. With this, three major themes emerged and these includes Discriminating Struggles which highlights the problem faced y male midwives. Conquering Discrimination emphasizes what male midwives have been doing to be able to combat discrimination or the troubles regarding their profession. Lastly, Motivation in practice despite discrimination reflects how male midwives been kept in track disregarding the unfairly treatment of everybody in their job. Based on this, it is then concluded that gender is not the measurement of capabilities as midwives.
