Abstract
The value of education has been established in the society. Anchored on this perception,it has been considered that age, civil status, and children are not hindrances to a mother to pursue her college educatio. These mothers usually need to handle and juggle multiple roles.Indeed, education plays a vital role in one's personal development.Hence, the researchers aimed to explore the lived experiences of student mothers utilizing a descriptive-phenomenological approach. This research paper centered on the exploration of the experiences of student mothers who pursue education while raising their children. Selection of informants was guided by the principles of purposive and snowball sampling. Eight (8) infromants satisfied the inclusion criteria set by the researchers. These were as follows: (1) single or married mother (2) at least 24 yrs old(3)has entered college for the first time(4)have been enrolled for at least two years in any 2 or 4 year college program(5)having at least 2 children(6)unemployed. Informants were interviewed one at a time using an audio video recorder. Data transcripts were analyzed utilizing the Collaizi's framework. In order to estasblish rigor and trustworthiness, the researchers did member checking, bracketing, and enumerated their biases wherein personal perceptions regarding the possible reults of the study were identified. The research findings revealed four major themes that reflected lived experiences of student mothers:(a) Perceptions on multiple roles that describes the informants role as a mother and a student,(b) Acknowledge time as diminutive resource,as time has been the central problem of the informants,(c)Stress on multiple roles, which reflects the challenges they need to endure , and (d) Settling positive effects from multiple roles which has been established as they juggle multiple roles. Based on the research findings, the researchers therefore concluded that student motheres struggle in order to perform their multiple roles. Thus, this research study recommends the government to grant financialaids personal empowerment programs to these student mothers in order to alleviate their multiple role conflicts.
